I found this tool while trying to troubleshoot my motor. vmaxoutlaw.com/tech/leakdown_tester.htm I did a compression test, but that didnt give me any info. This is an old school tool that can tell you alot about the health of your motor. Thought I'd pass it on. I believe in doing the homework first before changing parts. I hope it can be of benefit to some of you. BTW, the damper is important, or it wont work.

I've used leakdown testers since the seventies and they are a great way to determine the condition of an engine. The one thing I don't like about that particular design is there should be another pressure gauge at the regulator before the orifice to monitor the pressure. An easy change though.
Another low cost option is to buy Harbor Freight's leak down tester. I think you can get one on sale for about $30.
Keep in mind that none of those small pressure gauges are real accurate.

You are right about the second gauge, but all regulators have the ports, and I installed one on mine. Scavenged the cylinder hose and gauge from my compression tester, removed the schrader valve from the hose, and used a 1/4" male coupling on the "T" to quick connect the compression tester gauge! The other parts were "donated" for "government" work by the shop. Used a 1/4" coupling and filled it with JB weld, and had a toolmaker at work drill the .040 hole in it. Or for us laymen, a #60 drill bit. Tried it last night and came up with a believable 10% leakdown in the first cylinder. I plan to index the balancer to make the rest of it easier. TDC every 90deg. Results and pics of it this weekend for you guys. Btw, there have been posts on the web of the Harbor Freight ones being inaccurate, or not working at all. Thats why I went with this set-up.
